Development of enabling conditions for the management of protected areas

Development of enabling conditions for the management of protected areas

In recent years we have worked intensively on the development of enabling conditions for the management of local and national protected areas. This includes the implementation of governance mechanisms such as Support Platforms and Municipal Institutional Programs, which contribute to the sustainability of these areas. In addition, the development of the legal and regulatory framework, planning, management and community participation.

Creation of financial mechanisms for local and national protected areas

Creation of financial mechanisms for local and national protected areas

Recently, we have innovated in financial mechanisms to support protected areas. Among these innovations is the implementation of instruments such as the Tarija Municipal Water Fund, the first continuous support from a subnational entity to a national protected area, and the "Apoya Sama" program, a pioneer in Bolivia where private companies contribute monthly to the management of the Sama Reserve.

Changing the production matrix of the Tarija highlands through the reintroduction of camelids

Changing the production matrix of the Tarija highlands through the reintroduction of camelids

After years of effort, we have reintroduced llamas into the communities of the Tarija highlands, replacing donkeys and partially replacing sheep, thus transforming the local economy. This change has improved community incomes, empowered women and improved children's schooling - llamas require less attention than sheep. In addition, this has contributed to preserving the native pasture - llamas do not damage it, unlike sheep and donkeys.
